Boston Public Schools: Department of Adult Education

ADULT LEARNING CENTER (ALC):
ALC is committed to strengthening literacy and parenting skills of families of children enrolled in Boston Public Schools. The Family Literacy Program at the Adult Learning Center is a day-time program offering adult basic education, all levels of English for adult language learners, HiSET preparation, and computer literacy classes. Our program is free and parents of Boston Public Schools children are prioritized for enrollment.

Prospective students must attend an information and registration session, take a placement test to assess reading/writing and speaking/listening skills. The test results are used to determine the best class for the student (and there are no good or bad scores).

Please Note: The current wait time is usually six months. It’s best to add your name to our waitlist since we fill any open slots from the waitlist.

BOSTON CENTRAL ADULT HIGH SCHOOL (BCAHS):
The Boston Central Adult High School is an evening program located at the Madison Park Complex, Building 1 (55 Malcolm X Boulevard, Roxbury, MA 02120)

The BCAHS offers a 16-unit program (College Preparatory and General), leading to a diploma comparable to the one offered by accredited day high schools in the City of Boston Public Schools. This specialized school for mature and serious-minded people allows students to participate in comprehensive programs of study and to complete diploma requirements during evening hours while maintaining full-time jobs.

Boy With a Ball Boston

Boy With a Ball helps young people and families reach their dreams through launching youth as changemakers who ignite city-wide movements to transform hurting neighborhoods. Love Your City, our main effort, involves volunteer teams building friendships with community members in an at-risk neighborhood, learning about barriers keeping youth and families from their dreams, and launching youth as leaders into creating innovative solutions to help the community rise. Currently, Love Your City is focused on an apartment community in Jackson Square.

The Home for Little Wanderers Boston-Suffolk County Family Resource Center

The Home for Little Wanderers’ Boston-Suffolk County Family Resource Center provides services that strengthen families by connecting them to resources within their own communities and through innovative programming. We help to: divert families who are or may be at risk of becoming court involved; navigate different city and state systems (BPS, DCF, DYS, DMH, DDS, CBHI); refer families to needed supports; offer evidenced based and creative programs, workshops, and trainings; and host family fun events. We are free to the community and welcome all of Suffolk County to our center.
